Alexandru Paul is a visual artist with a diverse background in photography,
filmmaking, and engineering. Through his art, Alexandru challenges
traditional artistic categories such as authenticity, authorship, and the truth
value of representation. He explores themes of intimacy and fear using
various media, including photography, video, drawing, and installation,
often employing a paradoxical approach.
His works have been exhibited in private
galleries and museums both in Romania and internationally.

Biography

1971
• Born in Baia Mare, Romania
1981-1986
• Performance swimmer, trained under the Romanian communist
system (huge effort, no food), achieving average results with
some diplomas and medals in national cups and championships.
1986-1990
• High School – nothing special.

1990-1995
• Studied Geology at Bucharest University.
• 1992: Also accepted by the University of Architecture and
studied for one year. During this period, he began taking
photographs.
1995-1996
• Completed mandatory military service, during which he read and drunk extensively. Subsequently worked as a geologist in a gold mine near Baia Mare and continued taking photographs.
1996-2000
• Attended Bucharest Film University (UNATC). Started working for
magazines and advertising as a photographer. Graduated in
2000 with a degree in cinematography. Continued
photographing while shooting short films for school.
2000-2013
• Worked as a fashion and advertising photographer, as well as a
cinematographer. Collaborated with magazines such as ELLE,
FHM, and ESQUIRE, focusing on fashion and portrait
photography. Shot advertising campaigns for major corporations
and worked as a cinematographer for music videos for leading
Romanian bands and singers. In 2005, founded “Umbrela,” the first agency representing photographers in Romania.
Simultaneously worked on personal projects and participated in
various exhibitions. Also shot short and feature films.
2014-2026
• Focused more on art projects while continuing to work in
advertising and the film industry on appointment.
2022-Present
Member of Switch Lab and the “Atelierele Scanteia” association.
2025 – Present
